Cutting the Corner Southwest Minneapolis Bungalow Remodel
The homeowners loved the charm of their 1925 Southwest Minneapolis bungalow, fitted with original woodwork, large windows, and cozy nooks and crannies. However, the tightest rooms in the house were the tiny “one cook” kitchen and adjacent back entry crammed at the top of the basement stair landing. An addition was needed.
Angled to maintain drive access to the garage, the 81 square foot addition makes all the difference for life in the kitchen and back entry. The exterior back porch protects from the elements and flows to a mudroom. There’s now room for prep, cooking, and cleanup. In the kitchen, white cabinets with some glass lites and glazed tile help light bounce off various materials. The mix of quartz and butcher block countertops adds visual interest and serves different functions. At the threshold between kitchen and dining, stained cabinets frame the opening with sideboard storage for the dining. The dining and living were refreshed.
Remodeling in the back bedroom, now used as a work from home office, removed a stair closet and added an egress window for safety and light. The homeowners, who are talented woodworkers, used their basement woodshop to create the beautiful mudroom built-in cabinet. The previously steep basement stair was made safer by lengthening it by 3 feet.
